Got a call in mid-August: Mick Moloney wants to sample the tofu and do some jamming in the Ithaca area. Would CFSC like a last-minute addition to the fall concert series? How could we refuse?

Mick Moloney, native of Limerick, Ireland, now of NYC, is an accomplished folklorist, arts advocate, teacher, and musician. He puts his rich voice, mandolin, tenor banjo (Frets perennially names him the best player in America), and other instruments to outstanding use with his deep trove of songs and tunes from the Irish/Irish-American tradition. He has been seminal in the U.S. revival of Irish music and has recorded and produced over 50 albums, mentoring older musicians as well as the new crop: Eileen Ivers and others of Cherish the Ladies, Liz Carroll, and Seamus Egan.

Mick has hosted three folk music series on American Public Television; other PBS credits include Bringing it All Back Home, Out of Ireland (1995), and The Irish in America: Long Journey Home (1998). In 1999 he was awarded the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Those who love Celtic music owe him great tribute.

Friends who'll be mixing it up lively with Mick include Dana Lyn (rising star on fiddle, with Oberlin Conservatory and extensive touring in the Bay Area, NYC, and abroad to her credit), and Dubliner Eamon O'Leary (guitarist, bouzouki, and tenor banjo player, an omnipresent accompanist for Irish traditional music in NYC, and sought-after teacher at Irish festivals).

Tickets are available at Ithaca Guitar Works, Colophon Books (formerly Borealis Bookstore), Greenstar Co-op, Small World Music, Bound for Glory, and, if any are left, at the door. You may also order tickets online and by mail from CFSC, PO Box 481, Ithaca, NY 14851.
